Come On Die Young is the second studio album by Scottish post-rock band Mogwai. The album was released on 29 March 1999 by Chemikal Underground. Songs for Come On Die Young were written by the band members at home or together in the rehearsal room. Wanting a sparser sound, Mogwai drew influences from Seventeen Seconds by The Cure and Spiderland by Slint as well as Low, Nick Drake and The For Carnation

Too much, too soon" is a tattered rock & roll cliché, but it continues to tell the tale of many young bands, such as Glasgow's acclaimed post-rock collective Mogwai. Usually, the phrase is hauled out to describe an intoxicated downward spiral by bands that had too much success all at once, but Mogwai suffered too much praise - too many accolades from critics, too much reverence from underground hipsters.

Come On Die Young is a melodic, slo-mo album of increments and repeating intervals, where changes are subtle but no less drastic. It is a markedly different album to Mogwai's transcendent debut - where Young Team celebrates the wide open spaces, CODY is an altogether more agorophobic affair. A lot of this is down to the production - less distortion on the guitars, more keyboards and a flatter, echoless drum sound - but the songs are more muted, less volatile, though still incredible and intense in places. Punk Rock is Mogwai's mission statement up front: Iggy Pop slaughtering the misconceptions of middle America while the boys perform their brand of soulful alchemy in the background

Come On Die Young develops in one long movement, a sparse symphony of indie. You can follow its pattern like a weatherman charts flows from high pressure to low pressure. Unlike Mogwai's last album, which constantly shifted from loud loud to quiet quiet, Come On Die Young builds tension over eight and a half songs before erupting in the white noise of "Ex-Cowboy," "Chocky" and "Christmas Steps," the latter being the only respite from restraint for the riffheads
