Mountain Man is an American singing trio of women described as "nestled in the tradition of American folk" with a traditional Appalachian folk sound. They have earned acclaim from a number of music critics. They often sing a cappella, with a "sparse, haunting, hymnal beauty" sometimes accompanied by soft acoustic guitar, but with their voices "virtually unadorned", according to Guardian critic Paul Lester.
Mountain Man reconvened a few months later at Meath's home studio in Durham to begin what would become Magic Ship. Sauser-Monnig explains, "We all got together at Molly's house in the wintertime, on one of the snowy days that rarely happen in North Carolina. Prior to Mountain Man's formation, members of the band played in a band called Last Lights. The music to "Antarctica Is Everywhere" was written by the band's now deceased vocalist, Dominic Mallary and was intended to be used as a Last Lights song. After his passing, Mountain Man recorded the song with lyrics taken from samples of Dominic's poetry as well as lyrics from his solo project Haunted Like a House.
