Various Positions is the seventh studio album by Leonard Cohen, released in December 1984 (and February 1985).

Recorded with vocalist Jennifer Warnes (who later cut the album Famous Blue Raincoat, a collection of Leonard Cohen compositions), Various Positions is a stunning return to form - Cohen's strongest work since New Skin for the Old Ceremony. Cryptic and spartan, the set continues in the eclectic vein of recent efforts, but with greater clarity and focus, resulting in an intriguingly diffuse collection ranging from the Serge Gainsbourg-esque pop of "Dance Me to the End of Love" to the boozy, country-inflected "The Captain.

The Night Comes On may be the absolute highlight of this album, a rare gem ranking amongst the greatest of Cohen's songs. Like assembling a pearl necklace, it strings striking images of the domestic & personal, the universal, the spiritual, historical and prophetic on a thread of longing. As the song unfolds, the symbolism unleashes an almost supernatural power that stirs the psyche hinting at or conjuring vague specters of ancient memories. There are close correspondences in the song Anthem on The Future.

Leonard Cohen is indubitably one of the most legendary and successful singer-songwriters from the 60s. However, his label at first refused to release Various Positions, his seventh studio album, saying Look, Leonard, we know you are great, but we dont know if you are any good. The success of the album proved them wrong, giving us one of his most beloved and arguably his most covered song Hallelujah, along other gems such as Heart With No Companion and the Gainsbourg-esque Dance Me To The End Of Love. This is a nice addition to the rest of Cohens releases on Music On Vinyl.
