The First Day is the first of three collaborations between British musicians David Sylvian and Robert Fripp. It was released in July 1993 and the aggressive rock style was something of a departure from David Sylvian’s usual work. After scattered collaborations from the late 1980s, Fripp had asked Sylvian to join a new version of progressive rock stalwarts King Crimson, then on hiatus

David Sylvian (born David Alan Batt, 23 February 1958) is an English singer-songwriter and musician who came to prominence in the late 1970s as frontman of the band Japan. The band's androgynous look and increasingly electronic sound made them an important influence on the UK's early-1980s New Romantic scene. Following their breakup, Sylvian embarked on a solo career with his debut album Brilliant Trees (1984). The next release was the two-record set Gone to Earth (1986), which featured one record of atmospheric vocal tracks and a second record consisting of ambient instrumentals. In the early 1990s, guitarist Robert Fripp invited Sylvian to sing with progressive rock stalwarts King Crimson. Sylvian declined the invitation, but he and Fripp recorded the album The First Day released in July 1993.

Gone to Earth is the third full-length solo album by David Sylvian, released in 1986. The album is a two-record set featuring one record of vocal songs and one consisting entirely of ambient instrumental tracks. Guest artists include Robert Fripp (who co-wrote three songs) and Bill Nelson (who co-wrote one song). It was recorded in part at The Manor Studios in Oxfordshire, England, with producer Steve Nye. The album peaked at n. 4  . Gone to Earth (remix) (Fripp/Sylvian)" – 1:56. Camp Fire: Coyote Country (remix)" (Fripp/Sylvian) – 3:46.

Sylvian eventually declined but the pair decided to collaborate on a new project instead, augmented by Trey Gunn, Jerry Marotta and Pat Mastelotto. They released two albums (one studio, one live) and two singles before parting ways.
