Pretenders is the debut studio album by British-American band The Pretenders, released on 7 January 1980 under Real Records in the UK, and Sire Records in the United States. A combination of rock, punk and pop music, this album made the band famous. The album features the singles "Stop Your Sobbing", "Kid" and "Brass in Pocket". Nick Lowe produced the Pretenders' first single, "Stop Your Sobbing", but decided not to work with them again as he thought the band was "not going anywhere".

Fearless and incisive, Dave’s reportage-style tracks sketch out race, prison and abusive relationships, resulting in a landmark record. About 283 results for Alexis Petridis's album of the week.
Few rock & roll records rock as hard or with as much originality as the Pretenders' eponymous debut album. A sleek, stylish fusion of Stonesy rock & roll, new wave pop, and pure punk aggression, Pretenders is teeming with sharp hooks and a viciously cool attitude. Although Chrissie Hynde establishes herself as a forceful and distinctively feminine songwriter, the record isn't a singer/songwriter's tour de force - it's a rock & roll album, powered by a unique and aggressive band.
In 1982, the Pretenders responded to desperate circumstances with some of the strongest material they would ever produce. When Chris Thomas set up the Pretenders in the live room at AIR Studios, he chose to mimic the familiar feel of a live gig, with the drums on a riser and PA speakers used for monitoring. This shot shows the Learning To Crawl line-up of Chrissie Hynde, drummer Martin Chambers, Robbie McIntosh on guitar and Malcolm Foster on bass, playing at the Montreux Festival in 1984. One of the most challenging songs on the album for me was one that sounded kind of simple but had layer upon layer of guitars - 'Middle Of The Road'. It sounds like one guitar playing the riff, but there were at least six guitars.
View The Pretenders's concert history along with concert photos, videos, setlists, and more. The Pretenders is an English-American rock band founded in Hereford, United Kingdom that came to prominence during the punk and new wave movement of the late 1970s due to their innovative songwriting and charismatic performances. Since then, the band has experienced drug-related losses and numerous subsequent personnel changes, with American-born group founder, songwriter, vocalist, and rhythm guitarist Chrissie Hynde as the only consistent member.
Its all Pretenders, but even more so the Chrissie Hynde Show. The Pretenders was an album very much in the right place at the right time in the course of rock n roll history. With punk old news in much of Europe, and American punk still very much a thing of the underground in 1980 and dismissed outright by the mainstream, this album and band gave a rock n roll community something new and bold to embrace without feeling like they had to give up what they once loved.
