They were formed in 1978 by Jarvis Cocker and had a continuously rotating band membership until the eleven years between 1991 and their hiatus on 15 December 2002, during which they were largely settled. They rose to prominence during the Britpop era in the early 1990s with their album His 'n' Hers (1994).

The Sisters EP was released by Pulp in 1994 and was their third single released after the band signed to Island and reached number 19 in the UK charts, their highest chart position at the time. The other three tracks were recorded during the His 'n' Hers album sessions, but were not included on that album.

The Sisters EP is a classic example of Pulp's best work. Jarvis displays genuine emotion and feelings through his lyrical genius. The Sisters EP consists of four songs that anyone who has ever had an infatuation or a crush can relate to. The lyrics of 'Babies' are witty and thought provoking, especially the line: 'I only went with her cos' she looks like you!' Ed Buller is the producer of "His 'n' Hers", "Your Sister's Clothes" and "Seconds"; however the producer of "Babies" is less certain.

His 'n' Hers" was originally planned to be the title track off the album of the same name, released earlier in 1994, but it ultimately missed the cut and was instead was included on The Sisters EP, which included two other songs which missed the album: "Your Sister's Clothes" and "Seconds," along with the single "Babies. In a Melody Maker interview in December 1995, Cocker explained the theme of the entire His 'n' Hers album, which are reflected and brought to an apex on the title track.
