Sunday at the Village Vanguard is a live album by jazz pianist and composer Bill Evans and his Trio consisting of Evans, bassist Scott LaFaro, and drummer Paul Motian. Released in 1961, the album is routinely ranked as one of the best live jazz recordings of all time. Sunday at the Village Vanguard was drawn from material recorded during five sets on June 25, 1961 at the Village Vanguard in New York City

Sunday at the Village Vanguard is the initial volume of a mammoth recording session by the Bill Evans Trio, from June 25, 1961 at New York's Village Vanguard documenting Evans' first trio with bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian. Its companion volume is Waltz for Debby. According to Motian, when Evans built this trio based on live gigs at the Basin Street East, the intention was always to develop a complete interactive trio experience. At the time, this was an unheard of notion, since piano trios were largely designed to showcase the prowess of the front line soloist with rhythmic accompaniment.

After La Faro’s passing, Evans became deeply involved in the record, determined to turn it from a collection of the day’s best tracks into one that paid tribute to the bassist. Thus it opens with La Faro’s Gloria’s Step and closes with his Jade Vision which was the evening’s closer and the final time the trio played together. I don’t have an original Riverside pressing of this but I’ve got many original Riversides bought at the Cornell Campus store in 1964 when the label folded, and they are not what I’d considering audiophile quality.

Disappointed with my copy. Brand new... never been near my turntable but it has a scratch in Side B track 2. Returning it to the retailer for an exchange. Hopefully, it's not endemic to the whole series of pressings.

I feel I must step in here and defend “The Eclectric Recording Co’s“ reputation and vision. The “Co.” does beautiful, unparalleled, highly detailed work, well beyond what any other specialized vinyl reissuer (if that’s a word) is doing in the industry. They perform and produce at a level that is “fine art”, this isn’t “Wax Time” or some other “bullish!t”. These people have spent, not only a fortune on refurbishing “the right” antique recording and printing equipment, but an immense amount of time working to recreate/replicate each piece they have made available, all in the name of “Authenticity” mind you. Just take a look at their website and you will immediately begin to appreciate the depth and scope of what they are doing (their website is also unparalleled).Now, I am the proud owner of both the “Co’s“ Mono and Stereo versions of this release. I got the Mono out of curiosity, and with a sense of novelty, knowing full well that this album was never recorded in true Mono (two mic Stereo only). To my utter surprise, I found that “Co’s” Mono version wonderfully replicates the original 61’ Mono’s tones and colours, but with a stronger, yet sophisticated and smooth low-end that the original Mono never had. I can also report that the “Co’s” Stereo take stays true to the original 61’ RLP Stereo cut; nice clean detail, with very little (subtle) low-end to speak of (MoFi wins the race on having the “Worlds Finest Vinyl...” Stereo version of “Sunday...”).

They have a couple hank mobley albums and a few other great jazz albums. But mostly classical stuff. I definitely prefer the music matters or analogue productions stuff if I'm not going for the original press. Michael Fremer did a comparison with an audience for their Coltrane release vs the Analog productions KPG reissue and people had different preferences. So its not even guaranteed that you will like these ER reissues better.

The only one album from this One Step serie that was not previously in Mofi' catalogs. Everything else (albums by Santana, Donald Fagen and and the next reissues like Simon and Garfunkel - BOTW, Stevie ray Vaughan/ LPs) was already on CD, SACD or LPs.

The sound is absolutely amazing, no question, but my copy has some slight crackles on the first track (no visible marks), not very loud and not for too long but still dissapointing, and also couple of quite loud crackles at the end of B-side. All my other Mofi LP's are flawless, so kinda weird, that the most expensive one has some small but irritating defects. Maybe washing would help, but still...

Washing will help - crackles & pops are bits of junk deep in the grooves. It's also a good idea to clean right after playing. MoFi discs also quiet down after a few plays...

Yes, mayby my question was close to stupid question. I bought on pre-order 2 boxes, and they are still sealed. The numbers of both boxes are less than 1000. I thought maybe some small defects are associated with boxe's numbers - that are close by numbers. Then I contacted the MFSL and asked them: does anybody at MOFI know how many of this LPs pressed from ONE MATRIX? How does number of matrix connected with the hand numbered copie of the boxes? And they gave this answer: "The number of acceptable discs from one ONE STEP stamper varies. We've had it range from 300 - 1500 over the first three 1S titles. Our pressing plant uses whatever approved sides, in any combination they deem fit, to produce the desired amount of units ordered. There is no correlation between any of the matrix sides used and the serial numbers put on the boxes. They are not packaged in any strict numerical order in coming off the stampers". I myself with my not great English and not great knowledges in the process of pressing vinyl did not fully understand this answer. Once again, I'm sorry if I confused you.

Definitely clean the record! Pressing plants aren't the cleanest factories and debris will likely get on the records (small enough to affect the stylus.) I recommend playing it around 8 hours after a hot/cold cleaning to reduce static. I've noticed waiting too long after a cleaning to play (excess of 24 hours) will add more surface noise to the recording.

Phenomenal reissue. Solid bass (LaFaro shines), amazing clarity, wide, airy and deep soundstage, immediacy of Evans' piano and deep swing. What's not to like?!Packaging is class and the pressing immaculate! Miss out at your peril!

Sonically superb. Packaging a delight. Uncharacteristically for MoFi mine came with small scuffs and fingerprints all over the vinyl out of the box. Doesn't appear detrimental to playback, just disappointing for a $100 release.

Taken from the same sessions as "Waltz for Debby", these were last recording of bassist Scott LaFaro who died 10 days later. He is fairly prominent here. This is a highly regarded recording, and I can see why as the playing is excellent. Both members of the rhythm section get more of the limelight than on their studio releases, especially LaFaro. This is essential in any Bill Evans collection, and not out of place in any Jazz collection - Like all his work, it's all very laid back, and fairly cerebral, It doesn't make you work hard, but careful listening is recommended, along with it's sister album "Waltz for Debby".
