Skin Turns to Glass was only Aidan Baker's second album using the Nadja moniker, yet, despite the obviously nascent musical vision at hand (not to mention the fact it wasn't even originally released by a proper record company), it already reveals his astoundingly advanced grasp of recording techniques as a means for sculpting breathtakingly emotional material

Nadja are almost overwhelmingly prolific. Last year, the Toronto-based duo had seven releases; this year, they'll put out three studio full-lengths and five 12"s. Such profusion risks diminishing returns. Justin Broadrick's Jesu and Japanese sludge rockers Boris have both lost considerable mystique with similar fecundity. In Nadja's case, abundance is particularly counterproductive. Their ambient shoegazer metal is deep and expansive, best experienced unhurriedly. But that makes it no less valid. Both have peak-valley dynamics, but Skin Turns to Glass wields them more coarsely. After slowly building drones for three minutes, a drum machine stumbles in. Huge, fuzzed-out guitars lumber through slowed-down Creation Records chords.

This really isn't anything out of the ordinary style-wise for the duo: just four (well, three, but more on that later) big hulking slabs of shoegaze-y drone. This is not the "pummel your brain with one note for four minutes" drone of SunnO))) and company, but rather the deeply-textured and feedback-laden droney "doom" Boris has been known to dabble in. "Doom" is in quotes there because it sounds like some heavy doom metal, but it lacks the total feeling of despair and, well, doom that makes it doom metal. That's the basics of Skin Turns To Glass. The album also utilizes, at various points, other instruments like a piano and flute. The drums are programmed, but it's hardly noticable at the pace of these pieces, it's not like it'd be hard to play the parts.
