Once More 'Round the Sun is the sixth studio album from American heavy metal band Mastodon. The album was released on June 24, 2014, via Reprise Records. On April 17, 2014, Mastodon released the album's first single, titled "High Road".
Despite its trippy artwork, Once More 'Round The Sun is the quartet's most approachable album to date. Even though Mastodon go through the motions this time around, they're undisputed masters of their craft. That's why their combination of the crushingly heavy, the complex and the melodious is in a class by itself. Their output might have become more commercially viable in time, but it's crucial to point out how perfectly comfortable they feel with this shift in style.
Mastodon have shown a restless and inventive creative energy since they emerged in the early ’00s, progressing from the sludgy, riff-driven metal of their debut to the jagged, jazz-inflected shards of 2011’s The Hunter. While the band’s elaborate conceptual albums have been inspired by everything from Moby Dick to Rasputin, their sixth studio endeavour-Once More ’Round the Sun-doesn’t revolve around a central narrative theme. One More Round The Sun has Troy Sanders and Brent Hinds Growling, just not on the whole album.
