Quicksilver Messenger Service is the debut studio album of Quicksilver Messenger Service, released in 1968. This was Quicksilver Messenger Service's first album, although they had already produced two songs for the soundtrack of the 1968 movie Revolution. The album displays the group's jam sound amidst lighter pop-oriented songs.

Quicksilver Messenger Service was one of the most beloved bands form the mid 60’s, where at their best they conveyed bluesy flights of fancy, spurred on by the guitar interplay of John Cipollina and Gary Duncan. Tracking in a a mere thirty-two minutes, which was pretty standard for the day, where the band lays down six numbers of original and cover material, with some of their covers being so original that they outshine their forerunners. With most people knowing Quicksilver from their inspirational spirited freeform effortlessly flowing live album Happy Trails, it’s rather stark to hear this album, made up of music that comes off well, though will a strong sense of controlled orchestration, lacking that easygoing effortless vibe of Happy Trails that lives within the souls of everyone from those mystic nights.

Quicksilver Messenger Service's debut effort was a little more restrained and folky than some listeners had expected, given their reputation for stretching out in concert. While some prefer the mostly live Happy Trails, this self-titled collection is inarguably their strongest set of studio material, with the accent on melodic folk-rock.

The Quicksilver Messenger Service don’t sound quite the same since they’ve heard the Flag and Mike Bloomfield, late arrivals on the San Francisco scene. As a result, most of the album cuts (only six altogether) come across sounding like the Electric Flag, minus their blues-loyal predication and Buddy Miles, doing straight rock. An exception to the general tone of the album is Quicksilver’s interpretation of folk-rock (remember?) singer Hamilton (Bob) Camp’s Pride of Man. This is an unusual number for them to have done, but it’s really a better version than Camp’s original.
